Reports and transparency

Preliminary estimates · 2018–2025 · prepared 6 October 2026.

The retrospective email review estimated 758 incoming enquiries and support offers. Surrender or rehoming was the largest classified group: 406, or about 54% of these estimates.

These figures describe requests and offers found in the selected email records. They do not count individual people, birds admitted, completed rescues or successful outcomes. They are not audited totals, a lower bound, or the complete history of Little Beaks.

What the records suggest

Rehoming enquiries make up just over half of the classified incoming cases. Adoption enquiries, offers of practical support, and requests about found birds or care also appear. This supports reporting on the range of enquiries Little Beaks received; it does not establish the level of unmet need in the wider community.

Website forms account for 313 estimates, incoming Gumtree correspondence for 242, direct email for 180, and other bird-advert correspondence for 23. These channel labels describe where correspondence was found, not the outcome. Separately, 428 grouped conversations were classified as proactive contact with bird advertisements and are excluded from the incoming total. Follow-up dates do not establish when new outreach began or imply that this activity continued recently.

Later years contain more classified cases, but differences in retained correspondence, search coverage and communication channels prevent a reliable growth or demand trend. The search found too little evidence from 2017 for meaningful reporting; this does not mean there was no activity.

Operating context

Little Beaks’ ability to accept birds has changed over time. The exact dates of earlier intake restrictions and closures have not yet been matched to this dataset, so the yearly figures are not divided into policy periods.

As at 6 October 2026, Little Beaks is closed to all new intakes and continues caring for its resident birds. This current position falls outside the 2018–2025 figures and should not be applied retrospectively. See current intake information and frequently asked questions.

How the estimate was made

We searched retained email records, grouped related messages, and estimated the main reason for each enquiry. Automated classification and an AI-assisted review helped interpret incomplete records. The figures have not been independently validated.

Read the detailed counting method and exclusions

The search retained 15,300 unique message summaries. It used Little Beaks email aliases, the organisation’s name, Gumtree senders and bird-related terms, excluding spam and trash. Selected message bodies were read for 5,300 messages; this was not a full reading of every email in the mailbox.

Messages were grouped into 2,988 candidate cases using email threads and duplicate rules: website forms from the same person within 60 days, normalised Gumtree subjects within 120 days, and repeated content from the same sender within 30 days. Automated rules assigned an initial main category. A later AI-assisted contextual pass reviewed all 740 uncertain groups using first/latest saved messages and targeted expansion of intervening messages and replies. This was not exhaustive reading of every message. Original case membership was retained unless evidence supported a correction; a shared email thread alone was not treated as proof that separate forms belonged together. Classification accuracy has not been independently validated.

The 758 total includes only the seven categories above. Routine mail, internal tests, commercial mail, advert outreach, general contact and other excluded categories are not included. Of the 740 previously uncertain groups, 175 remain labelled unresolved, mostly because saved text is blank, signature-only, a greeting or an incomplete request. Three of these have been flagged for possible reclassification; they remain excluded pending that decision. The original 590 cases were not all re-audited.

What changed

Last updated 6 October 2026. Contextual review identified 170 additional incoming cases and removed two previously included duplicates, revising the estimate from 590 to 758. Category corrections and the year/channel breakdowns are included in this revision. The separate advert-outreach estimate increased from 423 to 428. These are revisions to our reconstruction, not new activity since the previous update.

Limitations and next review

  • Grouping may merge separate requests or split one request into several cases.
  • Phone calls, social-media messages, attachments and missing correspondence are not covered.
  • A reply, referral or offer of help is not evidence of a completed rescue or welfare improvement.
  • Before using these estimates as final public totals, manually review a sample across years and categories, resolve uncertain cases where possible, document errors and revise the figures.

Only aggregate figures are included here. Personal correspondence and case-level records remain private. This is AI-assisted preliminary analysis, awaiting owner and editorial review.
