Environment and AI use
Environmental protection is part of Little Beaks’ work. It should also shape how we build and maintain this website.
Reducing avoidable resource use
The site delivers prebuilt pages. Reading resources and using the site search do not require a generative AI response. We use compressed photographs and load some images only as they approach the screen.
We serve the bird photographs and fonts from this website. This removes the need for visitors to request those assets directly from the previous image host or Google Fonts. Hosting providers still process requests needed to deliver the site.
We have not measured the website’s full energy, water or carbon footprint, including the AI used during development. We do not claim that it is carbon-neutral, impact-free or powered entirely by renewable energy.
Where AI has helped
AI tools have assisted with code, design iterations, draft wording and accessibility checks. The bird photographs currently used are real photographs previously published by Little Beaks.
AI output can contain mistakes. Automated checks can identify missing information and inconsistencies; they cannot establish that a welfare claim is correct or that an image description is useful to a person using a screen reader.
Human editorial and accessibility review remains in progress. Source links support checking, but their presence does not mean every statement has received expert review.
Our requirements for future work
- Use AI only where it has a clear purpose; use simpler tools for tasks they can reliably handle.
- Keep private personal and animal-care information out of external AI tools unless an appropriate, explicit decision permits its use.
- Respect creators’ permissions and licences, and retain source and attribution information.
- Do not use generated images as evidence of real birds, welfare conditions or sanctuary events.
- Verify factual claims and record human review honestly.
- Reduce unnecessary transfers, generation and repeated work while preserving accessibility and useful content.
These choices do not resolve all concerns about AI training data, creator compensation, labour or infrastructure impacts. We will not present the use of an AI tool as proof that those concerns have been addressed.
People and places behind the infrastructure
Our assessment requirements extend to the communities and workers affected by hosting and AI infrastructure. They include land acquisition and displacement, community consultation and Indigenous rights, local water and electricity demands, pollution, working conditions and who bears infrastructure costs.
We have not completed a supplier-specific assessment of these issues. Missing evidence is not proof that no harm occurs, and we will not attribute harm to a particular provider without supporting evidence. Smaller downloads and an AI disclosure do not resolve these wider concerns.
Credible evidence of serious harm should lead us to review whether to reduce, pause or replace a service. Any change also needs to preserve access to the website’s useful information.
How we check information
On 5 October 2026 we checked the site’s own guidance against veterinary, government, welfare and research sources. We corrected unsupported wording, updated safety information and recorded unresolved checks. This was an AI-assisted source audit, not approval by an avian veterinarian or lawyer.
Care articles link to their sources. Research findings, official guidance, Little Beaks’ positions and owner-supplied information have different roles. A source-check date does not mean an article is a complete clinical guide. Legal details and disease advice can change; follow the linked authority’s current instructions.
News headlines link to external reporting and have not been independently fact-checked by Little Beaks. Human editorial, veterinary, legal and image-description review remains outstanding.
Search and privacy
Search matches are calculated in your browser without a generative AI response. Search terms appear in the page address and may therefore be present in browser history and hosting request logs. Guided-help answers are processed in the page and are not submitted to Little Beaks.
